Diaries from a British, Mayflower replica passenger are launching next month ahead of the 1620 commemoration

Peter Padfield, one of the last surviving members of the Mayflower replica crossing in 1957, is launching a new book containing his diaries from the voyage. In 1957 a courageous crew re-enacted the 1620 passage in a replica of the Mayflower with no added technology. Peter Padfield, then 25, was aboard when the ship sailed across the Atlantic from Plymouth in Devon to Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Peter Padfield, now 87 and a leading UK naval historian is publishing his diary from the voyage along with pencil sketches, cine film frames and kodak stills that were taken at the time. It’s a completely unique book and historical record. The official launch will be at Brixham Heritage Museum in Devon, UK on 7th September 2019. The book launches on the same day as the ship being put back in the water after a long restoration.

The Mayflower replica has been undergoing renovations at Mystic Seaport Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard in Connecticut. On 7th September 2019, Plimoth Plantation is proud to present the official launch and re-commissioning of the Mayflower. An engaging program of speakers and entertainment will set the stage for the ceremonial christening before the ship is lowered into the Mystic River for the first time since her restoration began in November 2016. In the weeks following the launch, the remaining stages of the restoration will be completed, and it will undergo sea trials. The ship will be prepared for a spring 2020 return to Massachusetts.

Highlights from the agenda in 2020

  • On 24 April 2020 Plymouth 400 Commemoration Opening Ceremony at the Memorial Hall, Plymouth, Massachusetts will take place. This will be a two-hour event of historical content, musical headliners, interpretive readings, choreographed movement, original productions and visual narratives to create a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. Honouring the past and celebrating the future, each of the commemoration themes – exploration, innovation, self-governance, religious expression, immigration, and thanksgiving – will be presented in creative ways. https://www.plymouth400inc.org/event/plymouth-400-commemoration-opening-ceremony/

  • From 14-19 May 2020 the Mayflower will be in Boston next to the USS Constitution at the Charlestown Navy Yard. This is part of the Maritime Festival taking place here. https://mayflowersails2020.com/event/

  • On 21 May 2020 the Mayflower will be open to the public at State Pier in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

  • 7th September through to 14, 2020: Mayflower visits Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, The Mayflower, a replica of the historic vessel, will arrive in Provincetown for a week of activities. During the visit, Mayflower, will be part of daily historical re-enactments of the 1620 Signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor. A Sunrise Toast and Bon Voyage event is slated for the 14 September, the day the ship leaves Provincetown for Plymouth, returning to its home at Plymouth Harbor https://provincetown400.com/2020-events

Dominique Kotsias, the UK Account Manager for Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism says, “we were really delighted to hear that Peter Padfield is sharing his journal from his voyage in 1957 on the Mayflower replica. What a special thing to do, highlighting this historic event that connects two destinations on either side of the Atlantic. We hope people in the UK will be inspired to visit the Mayflower and will be able to join in on some of events with the Mayflower in 2020 that are happening across the state of Massachusetts”

The Big Bend National Park is an 800,000 acre area of rock, desert and mountain scenery, located in the most Western tip of Texas, hugged by the Rio Grande River and bordering Mexico. The park was established in 1944, is one of the largest national parks in the United States and now welcomes over 440,000 visitors a year[i].

Although the park is the most remote of all US National Parks, the 200-mile journey from the nearest airport (Midland Odessa) is most definitely worth it, with a multitude of adventures to be had, spectacular scenery to explore, fascinating geological and paleontological discoveries to marvel over and some of the best star gazing opportunities to be had.

Hiking is the most popular activity within the park. With over 150 miles of hiking trails, there is everything from short walks to rugged multi-day excursions. Hikers can travel off-trail and day hikes require no permit. https://visitbigbend.com/hiking/

There are several local horse-riding stables that offer everything from short one-hour rides, to multi day camping trips. https://visitbigbend.com/horseback-riding/

River trips. There are five river canyons in Big Bend, and a number of operators offering kayaking, canoeing or rafting trips along the Rio Grande. https://visitbigbend.com/river-trips/

The extensive back road system in the Big Bend National Park offers great mountain bike access and there are local companies offering guided mountain bike trips as well as bike rental and repair. https://visitbigbend.com/bicycles/

The Big Bend National Park is one of the top bird watching regions in Texas and is the most bio-diverse park in the entire system. Within the park you can find species of butterflies, bats, reptiles, plants, ants and birds. Over 450 avian species either live in Big Bend National Park or migrate through at some point in the year. https://visitbigbend.com/birding/

Big Bend is known as one of the most outstanding places in the United States for Star Gazing. The fact that there is sparse human occupation in the region means there is no light pollution and visitors can enjoy marveling at clear views of the Milky Way as well as over 2000 stars. https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/stargazing.htm

At the Fossil Discovery Exhibit visitors can experience the changes to Big Bend’s plants and animals, and the world they lived in, through 130 million years of geological time. Specimens from Big Bend’s remarkable fossil record and vivid artwork illustrate the fascinating story of Big Bend’s ancient life.

Landscape painters, portrait artists and lovers of the arts will converge on Alpine, Texas for En Plein Air: The Art of Painting Outdoors. This slate of free arts events is presented by the Big Bend Arts Council in association with the Texas Portrait Society.

The weekend is centered on a series of “paint outs”, opportunities for painters to gather at picturesque outdoor locations and practice plein air (open air) painting. Paint-out locations are set for Alpine, the nearby town of Fort Davis, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, and Big Bend National Park. The paint outs are free for painters and observers alike, and the public is welcome to visit and watch as each canvas come to life.

The outdoor painting sessions take full advantage of the Big Bend region’s temperate summer weather. The high elevation and low humidity of Alpine and the surrounding area, combined with a late summer rainy season, make for average August temperatures well below those in other parts of the state.

Kicking off the festivities on Friday, August 30 will be a Portrait Painting “Face-Off” at the Museum of the Big Bend. Members of the Texas Portrait Society will assemble to create a portrait of the same model in one sitting. This is a rare opportunity to view a range of talented artists each take their own individual approach to the same subject.

Paint outs at a dozen or more locations are planned for all day Saturday, August 31 and Sunday morning, September 1, followed by a sidewalk art exhibit and sale at the Alpine Public Library where the artworks created over the weekend can be enjoyed and purchased.

The event concludes with an Artists’ Reception on Sunday evening at two neighboring galleries in downtown Alpine, Catchlight Art Gallery and the Big Bend Arts Council’s Gallery on the Square.
