  • For Immediate Release – August 2025, London:

As we solemnly remember the lives lost 20 years ago during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, Visit New Orleans is recognising and respecting the incredible resilience, innovation and grit that it took to rebuild our beloved city and cultural economy.

New Orleans went from an all-time low of 3.7 million visitors in 2006, the year after Katrina, to a record-breaking 19 million visitors in 2019 – a number we achieved again in 2024 following COVID recovery years.

Despite experiencing one of the country’s worst natural and manmade disasters, today New Orleans stands as a top leisure and convention destination that hosts some of the most iconic events on the planet.

Key to post-Katrina recovery was the resurgence of the tourism and hospitality industry, which employs more than 80,000 people in the New Orleans area. Tax revenue paid by visitors earns the city and state tens of millions of dollars for vital services including education, infrastructure and public safety for Louisiana communities. In 2004, 10.1 million visitors spent $4.9 billion. Compare that to the nearly doubled 19.08 million visitors who spent $10.4 billion in 2024.

Walt Leger III, President and CEO of Visit New Orleans, said, “The Katrina anniversary is traumatic for us as New Orleanians as we reflect on the nearly two thousand lives lost, and the tens of thousands of people who lost their homes and everything they own.

“There was no blueprint for how to recover from a disaster of this magnitude, but persistence and determination guided our path. When some outsiders asked why we would even consider re-building or welcoming back visitors, Visit New Orleans and our partners executed one of the greatest turnaround stories in American history. We showed the world that tough times do not last, but tough people do.”

Highlights of post-Katrina innovation, growth and rebirth include:

    Overcoming Unprecedented Brand Impairment

Our flooded neighbourhoods and most iconic buildings were the scene of worldwide negative media coverage for months. After cancelling $2 billion in convention business between August 2005 – 2006, Visit New Orleans led a massive multi-year global PR campaign to let people know it was ok to visit. Without visitors, meetings and events, we could not have restarted our economy.

We now use our learnings from Katrina to help other destinations rebuild their tourism industries after disaster, including wildfires in Hawaii, a typhoon in the Philippines, Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, and Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.

    Awards

Among many honours New Orleans has been named:

This new rail service is a significant development for regional tourism and commerce. For more information, visit www.neworleans.com/amtrak

    Air services

After seeing steady growth following Hurricane Katrina, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport opened a new $1.01 billion terminal in 2019, which drastically improved the passenger experience. In 2025, for the fourth year in a row, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport was named Best Airport in North America (5 to 15 million passengers per year) by the Airports Council International World’s 2024 Airport Service Quality program.

Now, with an eye toward the future, the airport is mapping out plans for the next 20 years of growth which could include additional passenger terminal space, more efficient roadways, expanded cargo operations, an aircraft maintenance facility and more.

    Restaurants / Culinary

The restaurant industry’s recovery was a powerful symbol of resilience and a testament to the spirit of New Orleans. Restaurants not only provided food to volunteers, but also became vital social hubs, contributing to the city’s cultural fabric and helping to rebuild a sense of community.

Also in the past 20 years, the James Beard Foundation has repeatedly recognized New Orleans for its contribution to America’s culinary heritage. At the James Beard Ceremony in the spring of 2006, Chef Susan Spicer and more than 20 chefs from New Orleans prepared the dishes that have made New Orleans one of the greatest culinary destinations in the world. At the 2024 James Beard Awards Jewel of the South was named Outstanding Bar and Dakar NOLA won the national award for Best New Restaurant.

Dooky Chase’s Restaurant received the 2025 James Beard America’s Classics award for being a cornerstone of Creole cuisines and Black American culture for eight decades. This prestigious award recognizes restaurants that are deeply rooted in their communities, cultures, and cuisines, and have stood the test of time. Chef/Owner the late Leah Chase, was celebrated for the restaurant’s role in hosting civil rights leaders, and for her collection of art by Black artists. Previous America’s Classics winners include Willie Mae Seaton’s Scotch House in 2005 and Dong Phuong Bakery in 2018.

In 2024 New Orleans & Company became the first city in the United States to secure and host the Americas Selection of Bocuse d’Or and Pastry World Cup. Bocuse d’Or is the most rigorous culinary competition in the world known as the ‘Olympics’ of the culinary world. The event is returning to New Orleans in the summer of 2026.

    Riverfront Transformation

New Orleans is currently undergoing significant riverfront redevelopment, with two major projects transforming the area: the Riverfront for All park and the River District.

The Riverfront for All project, led by the Audubon Nature Institute, will create a continuous 2.3-mile stretch of public park space along the Mississippi River, connecting Crescent Park to Spanish Plaza. In June 2023 after a $41 million renovation the Audubon Nature Institute opened a reimagined and redesigned Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium on the New Orleans Riverfront. Audubon Insectarium relocated from its former home at the U.S. Custom House to the Aquarium building. It is the only facility in the world to house both an aquarium and an insectarium under the same roof.

The $1 billion River District, a 39-acre mixed-use neighbourhood adjacent to the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre will feature a mixed-use environment, including offices and residential areas with affordable and workforce housing complemented with entertainment venues, cultural centres, retail, dining and public green space.

    Major Investments

The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre (NOENMCC), the sixth largest convention facility in the country, underwent a $557 million renovation with over 1.1 million square feet of prime exhibit space to be completed in 2026. NOENMCC is also the largest convention centre to receive the Gold LEED designation.

The Caesars Superdome recently finished a $560 million renovation prior to Super Bowl LIX in February. This iconic landmark that transformed the city’s economy celebrated its 50th birthday on August 3, 2025.

    Cruise services

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) announced it set a record high in March 2025 with over 165,000 cruise passenger movements – the number of cruise passengers who either board or leave a cruise ship. The record-breaking numbers topped Port NOLA’s previous high of just over 155,000 cruise passenger moves in March 2023.

This momentum comes after a record-breaking year in 2024 for Port NOLA with more than 1.2 million cruise passenger movements. New Orleans is one of the country’s most popular cruise ports with many travellers adding a pre- or post-cruise vacation.

    • In 2024, Carnival Cruise line celebrated its 30th year sailing from New Orleans. Carnival continues to be the only cruise line with two ships homeported year-round in New Orleans and is moving the larger Carnival Dream back in May 2027, joining Carnival Liberty.
    • Norwegian Cruise line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line have had a presence in New Orleans in the past two decades. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line brought the Escape ship this year. This ship is part of the Breakaway plus class known for their extensive entertainment offerings, and more dining options with 20 venues on the ship to choose from.
    • Royal Caribbean has had multiple ships sailing from New Orleans since 2005 including Brilliance of the Seas. In 2026 Mariner of the Seas will begin sailing from New Orleans.
    • American Cruise line started in New Orleans in 2018 with the American Song and now operates five vessels from the Port of New Orleans.
    • Viking River Cruises started sailing from the Port of New Orleans in September 2022, bringing state-of-the-art luxury to the Mississippi River.

    Hotels

Thanks in large part to new market and historic preservation tax credits, the hotel industry has undergone remarkable growth since 2005, with new brands investing in the city, and more than $1 billion in renovations. Examples include:

    • The Hyatt Regency underwent a $275 million renovation, reopening in 2011 after a six-year closure. One of the largest hotels in the city, the Hyatt Regency boasts nearly 1,200 rooms.
    • The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans reopened in 2006 after more than $100 million was invested in renovation efforts, including a new club level, a new restaurant called Mélange, and a new meeting area on the first floor offering 8,000 square feet.
    • The Roosevelt Hotel reopened in 2009, after undergoing more than $145 million in renovations. The Roosevelt has been a staple in New Orleans, originally opening in 1893.
    • Caesars Entertainment, Inc., finished a $560 million renovation prior to Super Bowl LIX, in addition to the more than $450 million spent to expand, renovate and rebrand the 450-room Harrah’s Hotel and Casino to the Caesars New Orleans, which included the opening of the Nobu Hotel in Caesars Tower. New Orleans is one of only 14 Nobu Hotels in North America, and one of 10 in the US.
    • Virgin Hotels, the lifestyle hotel brand by Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, opened the doors to Virgin Hotels New Orleans in 2021.
    • The Four Seasons Hotel moved into the former World Trade Centre in 2021. In 2022, the hotel was accredited with an AAA Five Diamond hotel designation, the sole hotel in the state of Louisiana bestowed the honour. The designation is reserved for the top one percent of the nearly 25,000 AAA Diamond-rated lodgings countrywide.
    • The Dew Drop Inn Hotel and Lounge, on Lasalle Street in Central City opened in February 2024. The boutique hotel includes 17 hotel rooms, a live music venue and a resort style pool. First opened in 1938 by Frank Painia, the Dew Drop was a hotel, music venue and barber shop. Legendary musicians played on its stage including Ray Charles, Little Richard, Deacon John and Irma Thomas.
    • Hotel Henrietta opened in 2024 and became the first hotel built from the ground up on historic St. Charles Avenue in 30 years.
    • One11 Hotel opened in 2020 and was the first new hotel to open in the French Quarter in 50 years.
    • The Higgins Hotel, Curio by Hilton, The Official Hotel of The National WWII Museum opened in 2019. The hotel was the first in the state of Louisiana to be part of the exclusive Curio Collection by Hilton, and all proceeds generated will support the ongoing educational mission of the Museum. In 2025, the National World War II Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary and continues to be one of the most popular museums in the country.
    • The Rubenstein Family, known for their legendary men’s clothing store Rubensteins on the corner of Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue, turned the upstairs of the building into a 40-room boutique hotel called the Rubenstein Hotel.
    • Copper Vine underwent an expansion to evolve the brand into Copper Vine Winepub & Inn, a ‘restaurant-first’ take on a traditional bed-and-breakfast with 11 rooms and an increased restaurant floor plan for expanded dining and private events.
    • Other new hotels to open since Katrina include Garden District Hotel, The Celestine, The Blackbird Hotel, Hotel St. Vincent, NOPSI, Hotel Peter and Paul, The Kimpton Hotel Fontenot and the Chloe.
    • A Major New Hotel Development: On January 30, 2025, The Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority approved a headquarters hotel development agreement and ground lease agreement with Omni Hotels & Resorts (Omni) to develop a 1,000-room headquarters hotel projected to be transformative for the city, region and state. These agreements allow Omni to move forward with development as owner and operator of a headquarters hotel across the street from the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre. Hotel design will continue throughout 2025, and construction is expected to start in 2026. The hotel is anticipated to open in 2029.

    Sports Mecca

Visit New Orleans, along with the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, have bid on, been awarded and hosted major sports events in the 20 years since Katrina including:

    • 2013 and 2025 NFL Super Bowl (2025 was our 11th time hosting Super Bowl, tied only with Miami)
    • 2012 and 2022 NCAA Men’s Final Four
    • 2013 NCAA Women’s Final Four, with 2020 cancelled due to COVID
    • 2012 SEC Men’s Basketball Championship
    • 2010 and 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball 1st/2nd Rounds and Regionals
    • annual Allstate Sugar Bowl and New Orleans Bowl
    • 2020 College Football Playoff Championship Game
    • 2008, 2014 and 2017 NBA All-Star Game
    • 2014 and 2018 WrestleMania
    • 2011 Bassmaster Classic
    • 2015-2016 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour
    • 2007 and 2008 Arena League Football Championship
    • 2006 USA Volleyball Championships
    • 2019 and 2024 SEC Gymnastics Championship
    • UFC 318; the 2025 U.S. Gymnastics National Championships; and much more to come. New Orleans truly is Built to Host.

    Meetings, Conventions and Voluntourism

We thank organisations such as Maritz Travel and the American Library Association, which were among the first to return post-Katrina, to not only boost our economy by hosting meetings and conventions here, but who gave their time to rebuild parks and libraries across our community. Their generosity kick-started the voluntourism trend that still creates a positive impact today.

In an increasingly competitive marketplace for meetings and conventions, New Orleans was named one of the top three convention destinations by Simpleview in 2024, with Meetings and conventions contributing more than $2 billion in direct spending annually. Convention attendees typically stay longer, spend more and engage more small businesses throughout the community to produce their events.

    World-Class Future Flood Protection

Perhaps our best post-Katrina success metric is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ $14.5 billion Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System, one of the most technically advanced coastal flood protection systems in the world. This system of barriers, sector gates, floodwalls, floodgates and levees provide a veritable “wall” around the Greater New Orleans area.

During Hurricane Ida in 2021, the flood protection system worked as planned, and we hosted a major meeting in New Orleans two weeks later. This is vital as it instils confidence in residents, investors, visitors and customers that New Orleans is the most prepared community across the Gulf South, maybe in the nation to weather future disasters.

This June we are ready to celebrate Pride Month in the USA, with parades, LGBTQIA+ festivals, and inclusive experiences. There is something for all travellers under the bright umbrella of the United States of America. Here is our guide to inclusive travel, year-round in the destinations we represent.

    New Orleans

Every June, events that unify and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community can be found throughout New Orleans. Parades, parties, fundraisers, and community events exemplify the welcoming culture for which the city is known. New Orleans has always championed arts and culture, fostering a lively gay social scene and drawing many LGBTQIA+ artists and performers to the French Quarter, home to Café Lafitte in Exile, one of America’s oldest gay bars. The longest running gay event, the Fat Monday Luncheon, kicked off in 1949, and the oldest gay social organization, the Steamboat Club, was launched in 1953.

New Orleans Pride Weekend this year is 13 – 15 June. One of the most exciting traditions is PrideFest, a block party hosted outside The Phoenix Bar on Elysian Fields. PrideFest and the parade are free to attend.

Southern Decadence occurs every year over Labor Day Weekend at the end of August and is the largest LGBTQIA+ event in New Orleans. The celebrations last through the day and night, with lively parties and parades. While the street parties are free, the weekend passes offered allow entry to exclusive events.

For more information: LGBTQ New Orleans

    Louisiana

Louisiana hosts a variety of events that celebrate and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community. Known for its welcoming spirit and love of a good time, Louisiana invites everyone to come together and celebrate pride.  One standout event among many is the Lake Charles SWLA Pride Con. Taking place from 27-29 June, this weekend is all about unity, creativity and celebration. With an exciting lineup of dancing, singing, live performances, and eye-catching exhibitions.

In Baton Rouge, Pride Fest returns on 28 June offering a space for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to celebrate in style. This indoor, family friendly event is free to attend and filled with opportunities to educate, uplift, and unite under the pride flag. Pride fest creates a safe, joyful environment where everyone can shine, connect and celebrate the diverse LGBTQIA+ community.

In Lafeyette, the Pride Acadiana Parade lights up downtown on 14 June with a display of colour, community and celebration. Taking over Jefferson Street, the event invites everyone to show up loud and proud in support of LGBTQIA+ visibility and joy. Whether you’re waving flags, marching with friends, or cheering from the sideline, the parade promises a night filled with unity and pure fun.

    New England

New England’s scenic landscapes, inclusive accommodations, and progressive attitudes make it a haven for all travellers seeking authenticity, acceptance, and memorable experiences. Massachusetts was the first state in the union to legalise and normalise same-sex marriage through the courts (2003), followed by Connecticut (2008).  Vermont was the first to legalise it through the legislature (2009), followed the same year by neighbouring New Hampshire. Maine achieved legalisation through public referendum and Rhode Island’s governor approved the Gay Marriage Bill in 2013. Ogunquit, Maine is a small beach community with a reputation for being exceptionally friendly to all those who visit.  Ogunquit Pride is easily accessible and the area is home to many LGBTQIA+ friendly hotels and resorts. Every June, Maine’s communities unite to celebrate Pride with a festival.

From vibrant cities like Boston and New Haven to quaint coastal towns there’s a spectrum of welcoming spaces tailored to diverse identities. For almost a century, gay and lesbian travellers have made their way to Provincetown, Massachusetts.  Today, the tip of the Cape draws its energy and spirit from members of the LGBTQIA+ community who come here year after year, some for the first time, and many who stopped counting long ago.

New England also leads the country in welcoming and accommodating LGBTQIA+  partners and their families. Pride Vermont takes place on 7 September in downtown Burlington and along the waterfront park, featuring an exciting lineup of performances.

    Boston

Boston is known for its inclusivity. As the capital city of the first state in the USA to legalise same-sex marriage, Boston stands proud, accessible, and welcoming. The city boasts one of the largest LGBTQIA+ populations on the East Coast with neighbourhoods such as the South End and Jamaica Plain offering a good variety of nightlife.

Boston’s LGBTQ Past walking tour traces the gay and lesbian culture that flourishes today. This tour is presented in partnership with The History Project, a nonprofit organization that documents, preserves, and shares New England’s LGBTQIA+ history.

Boston Pride For The People will celebrate Pride Month on 14 June this year. Events include a parade and festival which combine to create a collective city-wide celebration. A year round highlight is the Drag Brunch at Summer Shack every Saturday, featuring stellar entertainment and themed drag acts including the Barbie Drag Brunch, Beyonce Renaissance Drag Brunch, and the Rihanna Drag Brunch. For more information on LGBTQIA + events click here.

    Tenneseee

The Annual Nashville Festival and Parade  is the largest LGBTQIA+ event in Tennessee and kicks off on 28 June with the free Nashville Pride Parade. This year, the Equality Main Stage entertainment line-up will feature Kim Petras amongst others. Additionally, the Knox Pride Festival from 3-4 October is an open celebration of music, entertainment and speakers focused on promoting equality and the inclusion of all people.

Dolly Parton famously stated that Dollywood is a place for all families and for everyone. The Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration at the theme park, runs this year from 14 June – 3 August. The park is awash with colour including flying kites and rainbow pool noodles suspended overhead and surrounded by technicolour trees.

See local information and events: Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville

    Mississippi

Biloxi, Gulfport and Coastal Mississippi offer an inclusive environment in a beautiful setting. Visitors can head to LGBTQIA+ bars like Sipp’s in Gulfport, and Just Us Lounge, located within walking distance of Beau Rivage which is a melting pot of the area’s diverse and welcoming LGBTQIA+ community.

In Jackson, the fourth annual 5K colour run is an inclusive, fun race that honours LGBTQ+ individuals and allies as it raises money for LGBTQIA+ causes. In June, MS Capital City Pride, an LGBTQIA+ Community Building and Advocacy Organisation serving the Jackson Metro Area are hosting various activities to bring the pride community together.

For more information for events on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, including the eight annual Equality Fest in Biloxi, please see here.

    San Antonio

San Antonio has a vibrant LGBTQIA+ culture that has blossomed in the city, an evolution that stretches back to the 1950s, when drag shows arrived. Luther’s  stages a variety of events, including the Pride Block Party on the 24 June.

San Antonio’s Pride celebrations are as colourful as they are inclusive. June is full of events honouring and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community. San Antonio also hosts LGBTQ+ International Film Festival on 10-12 October.

Pride San Antonio celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community with the Pride Bigger than Texas Festival and Parade. Typically held at the end of June, this event highlights the accomplishments of the LGBTQIA+ community and raises money for local charities. For more information on LGBTQIA+ in San Antonio.

     Tucson

Tucson Pride returns to Reid Park in Midtown on 21-23 November. Tucson Pride was formed in 1976 by the Tucson Lesbian and Gay Alliance and is Arizona’s first and oldest LGBTQ+ pride organization and one of the oldest LGBTQIA+ Pride organisations in the USA.

Tucson enjoys a vibrant and inclusive LGBTQIA+ community, with a wide range of bars and clubs, LGBTQIA+ owned businesses, and an active LGBTQIA+ Chamber of Commerce. The city is home to numerous social clubs, political organisations, youth support groups, and LGBTQIA+ places of worship. Tucson’s progressive culture and relaxed attitude have helped make it one of the most queer-friendly destinations in the US to welcome visitors.

    Plan your visit to Tucson.

Take downtown Lafayette where the Festival International from 23-27 April is set to play on all your senses, promising a gourmet culinary experience, music from across the globe, handcrafted artworks, and much more besides. Best of all, admission is free.

    Visit New Orleans

From 24 April – 4 May, New Orleans ushers in the renowned Jazz and Heritage Festival, a time-honoured event that has become a crown jewel in the city’s festival scene. Dating back to 1970, Jazz Fest’s origins can be traced to a moment when Mahalia Jackson, often hailed the greatest gospel singer, was handed a microphone and spontaneously joined in with a passing brass band. It was here, in this pivotal moment that the spirit of Jazz Fest was born. Over the decades, Jazz fest has seen performances from musical legends such as Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Lenny Kravitz, Bob Dylan and countless others. With multiple stages every year, music swings in every direction, stretching beyond jazz to include blues, funk, Cajun, gospel and Latin. It’s no wonder Life Magazine dubbed it as “the country’s very best music festival”, while the New York Times called it an “an institution, inseparable from the city”. Headliners this year include Lil Wayne, Burna Boy, Lenny Kravitz, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Patti LaBelle to name just a few.

Every year, around the birthday of Louis Armstrong, New Orleans also plays host to Satchmo Summer Fest, dedicated solely to honouring the legendary performer, one of the founding fathers of jazz. This year from 2–3 August the lineup includes musical talent guaranteed to leave you in awe. However, the experience goes beyond music, for example, festivalgoers can indulge in a culinary experience showcasing some of the finest Louisianan restaurants or attend lectures that evaluate Armstrong’s enduring impact on music, the city of New Orleans and its cultural fabric. Best of all? the festival is free to attend.

March brings not only International Women’s Day, but also Women’s History Month, so TTM is celebrating the women who shaped America and continue to do so. San Antonio, Texas

“Food is a universal language and it speaks to everyone” – Nicola Blaque

Chef Nicola Blaque encapsulates why San Antonio is both a city of extraordinary women and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Blaque owns and is chef of Mi Roti, Freight Chicken, and was recently awarded a Bib Gourmand for Jerk Shack which blends Jamaican classics with Texas sizzle. Lisa Wong has been a driving force in San Antonio’s Culinary landscape for more than 40 years, with Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant, her revival of Rosario’s, and contemporary twists on Mexican comfort food. Cementing the city’s reputation is Chef Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin of Best Quality Daughter, a twice James Beard finalist for her unique take on Asian fusion.

San Antonio mayors have made US history, twice. In 1975, Lila Cockrell was elected as Mayor of San Antonio, becoming the first female mayor of a major metropolitan area in the US. Cockrell held office for eight years in total, between 1975–1981 and 1989–1991. 40 years later, in 2015, San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor was the first Black woman to be elected mayor of a major US city.

The Battle of the Flowers Parade was conceived by women seeking to remember the heroes who had fought for Texas independence at the Alamo. One of the oldest and largest parades in America, the parade has been the pinnacle of San Antonio’s Fiesta celebrations since 1891. The parade continues to be organised and produced by women, all volunteers.

    Tennessee, Sounds Perfect

“There’s a lot of talented women out there and we should all get a chance to do what we do” – Dolly Parton

From global icons to small-town trailblazers, the women of Tennessee have been inspiring and innovating in ways that leave a lasting impact. We all know Dolly Parton for her musical talent and magnetic personality, and she is equally celebrated for her deep commitment to philanthropy. One of her most notable contributions is the Imagination Library, a program she founded in 1995 to foster a love of reading among children. Inspired by her father’s struggles with literacy, Dolly started the program in her home county and has since expanded it across five countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland. Through partnerships with local communities, the Imagination Library now distributes over two million books each month, free of charge, to children from birth to age five.

Dolly recently teamed up with Tennessee Tourism to create the Tennessee Playcation Kid’s Guide. Available now at DollyPlaycation.com, the 90-plus page guide sparks creativity and pure imagination, helping families map out their dream getaway. Meet Boston

“…having grown up without any visible role models, and especially no women of colour in hospitality, what would really make me happy would be to inspire somebody else to think, ‘I could do that too’ ” – Nia Grace

    Discover New England

“Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn”. – Harriet Beecher Stowe

Across New England, female authors have made homes and written timeless novels. Harriet Beecher Stowe, born and bred in Connecticut, wrote her antislavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, in Maine. Located in Brunswick, The Harriet Beecher Stowe House is a National Historic Landmark and National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. Edith Wharton’s country home and design project, The Mount is nestled in the heart of The Berkshires in Massachusetts. The site is open to visitors, who can tour the house and gardens, learning more about the author, who was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921 for The Age of Innocence.

Another writer from the region is Jamaica Kincaid, an Antiguan-American novelist, essayist, gardener, and gardening writer. She was born in St. John’s, Antigua (part of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda). She lives in North Bennington, Vermont (in the United States), during the summers, and is Professor of African and African American Studies in Residence at Harvard University during the academic year.

Susan B. Anthony, an intrinsic figure in the American fight for women’s suffrage, women’s rights, can be recognised and celebrated at the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum in Adams, Massachusetts. Another prominent figure in the struggle for the right to vote is Alva (Vanderbilt) Belmont, president of the National Women’s Party and avid campaigner. Her efforts can be remembered upon visiting Marble House, in Newport, Rhode Island, where she held many ‘Votes for Women’ rallies, and the ‘Conference of Great Women’.

The New Hampshire Women’s Heritage Trail is a trail of history markers throughout the state honouring women who have made positive contributions such as Amy Cheney Beach, who was America’s first internationally celebrated female composer.

    Visit Mississippi

“I was always my own teacher” – Eudora Welty, One Writer’s Beginnings

The Mississippi Blues Trail honors the people and places that have made extraordinary contributions to blues as an art form, genre, and cultural movement. Along this historic trail, you’ll find stories of remarkable women whose musical brilliance has left a lasting impact on generations.

One such trailblazer is Cassandra Wilson, a Grammy-winning jazz vocalist born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. Once declared “America’s Best Singer” by Time Magazine, Wilson’s soulful voice and genre-blending artistry has shaped blues music. Visitors can explore her roots on Albermarle Road in Jackson where a star was in the making.

Another icon featured on the Blues Trail is Memphis Minnie, a premier blues artist of the 1930s and ’40s. Widely regarded as one of the greatest female blues singers of all time, she was among the first twenty artists inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Many of her songs have been popularized by household names, cementing her influence on the evolution of blues music.

Visitors to Mississippi can journey through history by joining the Extraordinary Women 2025 “Mercy & Grace” Tour or follow the Mississippi Blues Trail to discover the women who helped shape the blues as we know it today.

The Mississippi Writers Trail also celebrates renowned female Mississippi authors such as Eudora Welty, Ida B Wells, Margaret Walker and Natasha Trethewey. Each marker tells a story around the places where they lived, worked and found their inspiration, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the history behind their written works. Eudora Welty became the first author honoured with a historical marker on the Mississippi Writers Trail at her house in Jackson, Mississippi, which is now a designated National Historic Landmark and is open to the public as a house museum.

    Louisiana

“I paint the story of my people. The things that happened to me and the ones I know. My paintings tell how we worked, played and preyed”.  – Clementine Hunter

Visitors to Natchitoches can view a significant collection of work by African American folk artist Clementine Hunter who was a self-taught and captured the essence of everyday life through her paintings, becoming one of Louisiana’s cultural figures. She lived and worked on Melrose Plantation, which remains open to visitors today.

With no formal training, Clementine Hunter used whatever she could find, scraps of paper, wine bottles, even snuff boxes, painting with discarded supplies from visiting artists to Melrose. Despite her immense talent, recognition came later in life. She became the first African American artist to have a solo exhibition in New Orleans and later showcased her work at Northwestern State College. Hunter didn’t start painting until her 50s, yet she created more than 5,000 works, leaving a rich artistic legacy. Today, her reprints can be found where her journey began, Melrose Plantation, as well as in shops throughout the National Historic Landmark District. Her work remains a crucial record of Southern Black culture and everyday life, preserving history through art.

Louisiana is celebrating a Year of Food so here are four favourite female chefs; Susan Spicer began her culinary career in 1979 and has been recognised by the James Beard Foundation as Best Chef Southeast and is best known for her fusion restaurant Bayona. Born and raised in St. Lucia, Nina Compton competed and was runner-up on Top Chef season 11 in New Orleans. Chef Nina fell in love with the city, prompting her to open her highly acclaimed Compère Lapin and Bywater American Bistro. Chefs Sam and Cody are the owners of Hot Tails in New Roads and Prairieville, they won the 2013 Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off, earning the titles “King and Queen of Louisiana Seafood” and starred in their own Food Network show “Cajun Aces.” After graduating from the John Folse Culinary Institute and starting in the Commander’s Palace kitchen in 2008, Chef Megan “Meg” Bickford took on the role of Executive Chef in 2020 – the first woman to earn the position at this legendary New Orleans establishment.

    New Orleans

“In my dining room…we changed the course of America over a bowl of gumbo and some fried chicken.” – Leah Chase

Leah Chase was the undisputed Queen of Creole Cuisine. Her food did more than nourish, it told the story of Louisiana, embodying its culture, resilience, and soul. Dooky Chase’s Restaurant, was founded in 1941 in one of the nation’s oldest African American neighborhoods, Tremé, it became much more under Leah Chase’s influence. During the Jim Crow era, the restaurant served as a lifeline, cashing checks for Black dockworkers when local banks refused. It was also one of the rare spaces where Black and white patrons could gather socially.

The restaurant became a strategic hub for the movement, hosting Freedom Riders as they planned protests and operating as the city’s first gallery to showcase African American artists. To experience a true taste of history, stop by Dooky Chase for a legendary bowl of gumbo, and pay tribute to the woman who made it possible.

Beyond the restaurant scene, women-owned businesses  and entrepreneurs are making waves across the city. Babes in Business, an initiative uniting forty-five local women-owned businesses, serves as a roadmap to support and celebrate female entrepreneurs in New Orleans. Spearheaded by Alice McGillicuddy, owner of Glitter Box, the initiative highlights the unique challenges women business owners face.

Grammy-winning singer Irma Thomas had her first hit in 1959, and over the course of a six-decade career has earned the title, “Soul Queen of New Orleans”. In addition to her Grammy, Thomas has earned countless awards over the span of her career and was named by National Public Radio as one of the 50 Great Voices of all time. Thomas has played at every Jazzfest since 1974 – both secular and gospel sets – and is a New Orleans cultural icon, much-loved for her engaging personality and commitment to the community.

    North Carolina

“We are part of the earth, and everything around us is part of us” – Myrtle Driver Johnson

Located in Salem, the Single Sisters House Museum tells the story of 16 courageous women who left their homes in 1766 in search of new beginnings. Two decades later, in 1786, three of these pioneering women established their own house in the village of Salem after a remarkable 500-mile journey. The Single Sisters House became a haven for female teachers and students, where young women received an education in mathematics, science, geography, and the arts—subjects rarely accessible to women at the time. For years, the Single Sisters ran the school, shaping generations of educated, independent women.

Today, the house stands as a powerful tribute to their entrepreneurial spirit and the enduring value of equal education and opportunity for women. As the longest-standing building in the United States continuously associated with the education of girls and women, it serves as both a historical landmark and a testament to progress. Visitors can step back in time through exhibits that bring to life the daily experiences, work, and lasting contributions of these remarkable women.

Located in Cherokee, North Carolina, the Museum of the Cherokee People  offers visitors insight into the culture, art and heritage of Cherokee people. Born in Big Cove, North Carolina, Myrtle Driver Johnson is a Native American who has devoted her life to preserving the Cherokee language and cultural traditions. A respected Indigenous advocate, she has developed Cherokee language lessons and translated numerous children’s books. Myrtle’s story is one of unwavering dedication to cultural preservation and the innovative use of literature, enabling people of all ages to connect with the unique Cherokee language.

    Visit Tucson

“I made my recipes work so that if it was good, it was good for your health” – Carlotta Flores

A UNESCO City of Gastronomy, many of the restaurants in Tucson are owned and led by women. El Charro Café is owned by Chef Carlotta Flores, the third generation of her family to continue the legacy of the oldest Mexican restaurant in the USA, which is still in continuous operation by the same family.  In ten years, Wendy Garcia went from selling tamales at local farmers markets to being recognized by the acclaimed James Beard Foundation, her restaurant, Tumerico, offers a vegan menu that changes daily, based on the season and the availability of local produce.

Outside of owning and operating businesses, women in Tucson continue to lead and leave their mark in the city in numerous ways. Maegan Lopez of the Tohono O’odham Nation is Gardener and Cultural Outreach Liaison on Tohono O’odham agricultural practices at Mission Garden. Their goal is to help re-introduce native foods to people in her community and influence the local food culture in light of this history.

The Tucson Desert Art Museum hosts national exhibitions from the Smithsonian Institution, Women Artists of the West, and American Women Artists.  Female artists who call Tucson home include muralist Jessica Gonzales, and custom tile designer Carly Quinn.

For more than 500 years, the Outer Banks have been home to a herd of wild colonial Spanish mustangs. These horses, believed to have arrived as early as the 1520s, may have come ashore after a shipwreck or been left behind by settlers of failed colonies. The largest herds roam the northern shores of Corolla and the southernmost Shackleford Banks, with groups of up to 100 stallions, mares, and foals. The mustangs can be seen on a guided tour or an off-road adventure on your own.  witnessing these powerful creatures is unforgettable.

Further south, Bald Head Island is a sanctuary for sea turtles, where hatchlings begin their journey from nest to ocean. As they emerge from their sand-buried nests, the soft yellow beach looks as though it is bubbling with little specks of moving green. From May to November, these same turtles return to lay their eggs on the very shores where they were born.
